QUESTION & ANSWER

BARLEY BEER AND GLUTEN

Question: I read your article “Does barley beer contain any gluten?” Because I have coeliacia and I like the occasional beer I have found the following … a beer brewed on maize and barley. The beer is called Argus and is brewed in Huizen in the Netherlands. May I now suppose that this beer does not contain any gluten?
Dorothé S.

Answer: The beer Argus from Huizen (NL)is a pilsener and, as such, therefore little or no gluten. However, there are still differences between the lager-type beers, but the direct measurement of gluten in beer is a complicated matter, and the brewers are not usually inclined to provide much in the way of information in the matter. It general it may be assumed that pilseners need not be avoided by coeliacia patients, although the golden rule continues to apply here that experience is the best teacher.
