QUESTION & ANSWER

14/01/2002
As from when can one be considered an alcoholic?

Question: Hi, I am a student in Louvain-la-Neuve and regularly drink large quantities of alcoholic drink. I would like to know as from when somebody could be considered an alcoholic. What are the characteristic symptoms?
Marius

Answer: It is impossible to express in quantities of alcohol whether or not you are an alcoholic. There is no quantity limit. It is not so much the amount of alcohol that plays a role, but more your personality. From the moment you have got the impression your freedom is limited because of your consumption of alcohol there is a problem. When you are longing for alcohol and you have the feeling you don’t seem to be able to manage your drinking behaviour anymore, you are clearly in a danger zone. There are lots of symptoms that indicate that someone has fallen victim to alcoholism. We will list up just a few examples : keep on drinking even when there is nothing to celebrate or no reason to be sorrowful, drinking more than the others in the party, drinking at times that one should work, not remembering anymore what happened the evening before (blackouts), needing a drink in the morning to feel ‘human’ again, looking forward to the moment you can drink, drinking secretly, hiding your drink(s), becoming out of control, bitter and lonely.
If alcohol starts to determine your actions instead of the other way round, then you should slow down and reduce your alcohol consumption. If this turns out to be difficult you can always try to get help from some official institution that might be able to help.
