INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL DURING PREGNANCY ON BEHAVIOUR OF CHILDREN THREE YEARS OF AGE

Children of mothers who drink in moderation during pregnancy present no increased risk of behavioural problems, nor of any cognitive retardation, up to the age of three years. Such is the conclusion reached by British researchers Y. Kelly et.al.

The connection between alcohol consumption during pregnancy and the risk of behavioural problems, hyperactivity and emotional dysfunction seems to follow a “J” curve, in much the same way as other alcohol-induced conditions. Mothers who drink the occasional one or two standard units of alcohol during pregnancy do not cause any behavioural abberations, nor any cognitive disorders, for their children up to the age of three years, this in comparison with mothers who drink no alcohol at all. On average, they even score rather better. That said, heavy drinking will, in fact, lead to such impairment of the faculties of children up to the age of three years.
